Invasive Species
Related to country: Australia

The prevention of the introduction of new invasive species is a key environmental and agricultural issue in much of Australia. Invasive species harmfully affect and disrupt the ecosystem of Australia. Australia is host to 56 invertebrate animal species. Many programs have been created to prevent foreign species from thriving in Australia. A cane toad control program aims at preventing the spread of new species in Western Australia. One of the most common methods used to prevent invasive animals is shooting. They hunt foreign species as a sport and to help the countries issue of invasive species. Another attempt to help the problem was a program that promoted indigenous plantations to attract native birds but generally did not help the situation. We also saw in the movie how they created a long fence to stop the wild dogs from harming native species. Some invasive species include birds such as the Mynah that was brought to control the Iocust plagues but they now cause damage to human property. There are also invasive freshwater species that have devastating impacts in Australia’s native aquatic life. There are insects that have hurt exotic elm tree’s and marine nests that have harmed the Great Barrier Reef.
Invasive species are continuously having negative affects on Australia and are threatening many species only native to Australia. More action should be made to help prevent this major issue. These invasive species originated at many different times and were brought over from foreign countries. Many of them adapted easily in Australia and therefore dominated the land and fed off of native species that weren’t used to or adapted to this kind of threat. Many fear that if the unbalanced ecosystem of Australia falter’s anymore than it already has it will be in grave danger.
